A Word About Pet Adoption

003 300x225 A Word About Pet AdoptionPlease Consider Adopting a Rescue or Shelter Pet Instead of “Buying” One

Well, I figure that if you’re here reading about making homemade or natural recipes for dog treats or cookies or day-to-day food for your pet, then you obviously care a great deal about animals – or at least your own beloved pet.

I just spent the last few minutes weeping over some of the sadness I see in the world of neglected and homeless animals. Please consider this particular blog post a special “PSA” – or “Public Service Announcement” from me, on behalf of all the animals I wish I could help… Continue reading “A Word About Pet Adoption” …

OMG! A Pet and Dog Treat Business? OH YEAH!

Dog Treat Business 2 OMG! A Pet and Dog Treat Business? OH YEAH!Wow! Who’da thunk it? A dog and pet treat business? I just got down to Florida where I’m spending the winter, and heard about this potential.

Look, if you love pets (and since you’re here, I’m guessing you do! icon smile OMG! A Pet and Dog Treat Business? OH YEAH! )I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! What an absolutely brilliant idea! And such inexpensive start-up!

I was walking around this little park yesterday that’s less than 1/2 mile from the house we’re staying in for the winter, and could NOT believe how many well-loved (and spoiled rotten hee hee) pups there are out there walking with their humans.

I’m serious. You should see some of these dogs. I think their owners spend more on THEM and their “outfits” than I do on my own. Continue Reading about “A Pet and Dog Treat Business”…

What People Foods To NOT Feed Your Pet!

Dog Treat 5 300x200 What People Foods To NOT Feed Your Pet!There are certain “people food” that you really should not feed your pet. I remember when I first started eating less sugar, one of the sweetners I turned to was Xylitol. Xylitol is a fairly “low-glycemic” sweetener derived from birch or corn, and is considered a decent HUMAN choice for lowering sugar content.

HOWEVER… Xylitol can be absolutely DEADLY to your pets. I had always heard that chocolate was a no-no for dogs and cats, but it wasn’t until I started thinking about how often people give their furry friends a little treat at the table that I realized, “Oh my gosh… I need to tell my friend NOT to give Fluffy any bites of that muffin I gave her! I used Xylitol instead of sugar in it!”

So, since on this site I’m bringing you resources as to where you can find the best recipes for dog treats and learn about dog food dangers (in commercially produced dog foods), I felt I owe it to you to list the “people foods” that we should avoid giving to our beloved pets. I searched and found a list that vets and animal organizations (like the ASPCA) appear to agree on.

Here they are (in no particular order): Continue Reading “What People Foods to NOT Feed Your Pet”…

Easy Chicken Dog Treat Biscuit Recipes

dog treat 281x300 Easy Chicken Dog Treat Biscuit RecipesThere are some REALLY Easy Chicken Dog Treat Biscuit Recipes out there. First, most dogs (and kitties) that I’ve known like Brewer’s Yeast. My Kitty was HOOKED on Brewer’s Yeast – and even though the vet couldn’t explain it (except to say, “Well it’s anecdotal – but keep doing it!”) – Kitty NEVER had so much as a single flea or tick.

Until we ran out of Brewer’s Yeast one fateful summer… icon smile Easy Chicken Dog Treat Biscuit Recipes So, take it with a grain of salt since we have no proof other than that it seemed to help us – but why not give Brewer’s Yeast a try?

Ok… Easy Chicken Dog Treat Biscuit Recipe.

First, Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2/3 cup Brewer’s yeast
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder (they seem to like this too!)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 3 chicken bouillon cubes (or beef)
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Mix everything together well.

Take about 1/2 the dough and roll it out until it’s just about 1/2″ thick – or just under 1/2″ thick. If you have cool “dog bone cookie cutters” you can use them! Otherwise, simply cut them into squares or other desired shapes.

Repeat with the other 1/2 of the dough.

Bake for 20 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Then, turn the oven off … BUT leave biscuits in oven until crunchy.

This yields about 1 pound of chicken dog treats or biscuits (or beef flavored if you used beef boullion) that you dog will love!
